Missouri crime victim families might see some relief from a proposed law filed by Missouri House of Representatives member Scott Largent. Read the full bill here.
Essentially the bill limits the disclosure of sensitive crime scene photographs. Although it will still be necessary to provide the photographs to defendants in the context of a criminal case, the general public or media will be barred from receiving them via an open records request, without the consent of the victim’s family.
The spirit of this bill is on point. Crime victim families endure a great deal of stress without the added worry of who might obtain sensitive photographs of a loved one. This bill lets the photographs be used for legitimate reasons, without them being released for unnecessary or sensational purposes.
